8 tips to achieve healthier skin

As we age, our skin does too, becoming thinner, losing its protective fat layer and, with it, its plumpness, elasticity and smoothness. Some of these changes are genetic, some are the result of damage from exposure to the sun.

On one level, achieving perfect skin as we grow older, or at least ensuring it looks as healthy as possible comes down to a few low-cost or no cost-solutions: staying hydrated, getting enough sleep and washing your face.

Beyond these basics are a few more suggestions recommended by dermatologists. Here are a few:

  • Wear sunscreen — while a lot of skin damage likely took place when we were much younger, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more can still go a long way to maintaining the skin you have now. You can also protect your skin with SPF makeup and by wearing sunglasses and hats.
  • Keep it simple — there’s no shortage of skincare products available but find a cleanser and moisturizer that you like and use them consistently.
  • Exfoliate — Our skin layers are constantly being regenerated but to help the process, try a pH neutral exfoliant. It can make sullen looking skin look brighter.
  • Get enough sleep — eight hours of rest each night isn’t only good for your insides, it helps what’s on the outside too.
  • Eat well — speaking of your insides, what you eat can impact your skin too. Omega-3 fatty acids help your skin retain moisture, so include foods like flax seeds or omega-3 supplements. Some skincare specialists believe drinking chlorophyll or other green juices helps provide skin with anti-inflammatory properties and drains puffiness, though the science on this is still being debated.
  • Stay hydrated — drinking enough liquids each day helps your entire body stay hydrated, including your skin.
  • Don’t smoke — smoking narrows your skin’s blood vessels, depleting it of oxygen and making it look paler. It also damages the collagen and other fibers that give your skin its elasticity
  • Reduce stress — long-term stress can trigger acne and other physical issues. Work on reducing stress in your life, consider mindfulness or meditation or other activities that help you relax.

Did you know? Be gentle

Always treat your skin gently — after washing, pat it gently with a soft towel. That’ll help your skin retain some of its moisture. (Source)
