As with our favorite books of 2023, choosing the best films over the last 12 months is always a challenge. These days, amazing movies are just as likely to find their way to movie, TV or tablet screens.
Still, we’re going to give it a try. Here are five films from this past year that we can’t stop thinking about:
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: After a dozen films featuring this legendary superhero, how much more was there to say? Still this latest installment delivered with amazing visuals and non-stop action.
Oppenheimer: Has Christopher Nolan ever made a bad movie? This stunning movie featuring physicist Robert Oppenheimer’s development of the atom bomb is one of the year’s best.
Barbie: The other half of 2023’s Barb-enheimer summer, this surprisingly clever and subversive hit, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, made us laugh and think.
You’re So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah: A heartwarming Netflix tween comedy that tells the tale of two besties in conflict and their plans for a bat mitzvah to remember.
Alice in Borderland: If you loved Squid Games, you’ll love this Japanese series we binged on in 2023, in which an obsessed gamer name Arisu finds himself in a game-ified version of Tokyo, struggling to survive — a third season is scheduled for next year.
What were your favorite movies of 2023? Let’s talk about it with the Shop Talk community!

Did you know? WHAM!
If you know, you know… this absorbing Netflix documentary recounts the rise of the legendary 80s pop sensation and the struggles of duo George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley.

wasn’t my favorite movie
I’m confused what do I do I win but no collective emails or anything
The best 2023 movie for me is Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan always makes the best movies, and this one is great as well.
me too
I loved Barbie. Know there was a lot of controversy over it but I thought it was spot on and the music was the greatest.
My favorite movie was the Holdovers.
good movies to me
can’t wait to watch this
Didn’t watch any of these movies.
the Barbie movie was okay something new something different I love the graphics and it took me back to my childhood when I used to play with Barbie and Ken
I loved Barbie movie! As a Barbie collector it was so cool to see her come to life along with Ken. And I will be watching WHAM…this was one of my favorite 80’s groups!
I actually went to see Oppenheimer and saw some of the preview at the movie theatre and on tv. I did not like any of these movies
I only saw one movie this year, it was “Sound of Freedom” I found it very moving and eye opening, and anyone who is a parent, grandparent or works with children, should see this and spread the word about human trafficking, it is also happening in our cities too and not in some far away country
No reply. Did not see the movies.
My favorite movies were chevalier, the holdovers and till. I go every Tuesday when tickets are cheaper so I see most of what comes to town. Some of the movies were poorly written, redundant, too long and self important. I felt Oppenheimer fell into those categories. I liked Barbie but not as much as some smaller less publicized films.
seen Barbie with my granddaughters. I loved it because they loved it. Then I watched a few action and super hero films with my grandsons. Tickets are expensive. popcorn and candy and something to drink is ridiculous. It causes a person to want to bring stuff with them.
Sound of Freedom was, by far, the best movie that I saw this year. It was extremely well-acted, and the story was both compelling and heartbreaking. The best part was that it helped to shine a light on a huge problem going on in the world, and it made many people aware of that problem that might have otherwise been unaware, so it served a greater purpose other than entertainment.
Alice in Borderlands was the best. I’m now waiting for another season.
All good movies
I wouldn’t be bothered with any of the movies in 2023 especially Barbie.
